In this final episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 safety prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one at #14 is low, but later in the draft, almost a must. Harrison Smith and now the new free agent signing of Xavier Woods from Dallas will lock down the two starter spots, but behind them, the cupboard is weak and pretty bare. It may stay that way, or the Vikings actually might be looking for a future replacement for Woods who signed only a 1 year deal, or Smith if his age starts to catch up with him. Who are the best available?
This safety class is interesting. While there isn’t a true dominant player like there has been in years past, there is a lot of good talent on day 2 that can be had. There is a lot of variance with this class as well with multiple box, slot hybrid and center field players available.
When I evaluate safeties, I’m looking for a lot of things but the two things I want to see are instincts and range. If you can provide those two things I can work with and around the rest of your game. Why are they so important? Having great instincts can prevent you from making crippling mistakes and also make game-altering plays on the back end.
