After Tua tragically fractured and dislocated his hip against Mississippi State late last year, a relative unknown quarterback took the field in Mac Jones. Only a 3 star recruit in the 2017 cycle, Jones took the field and was inconsistent initially until the bowl game when he flashed a great deep ball. From then on, he went on a tear in leading Alabama to a national title. One of the looming questions with Jones is this: how much of his game is him and how much of it is the talent surrounding him? After further study, I still don’t know the answer and that is worrisome.

Mac Jones
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 214 lbs
Strengths: Jones is very savvy in the pocket, being able to maneuver around pressure with ease. Does a solid job moving through his progressions and finding the outlet. Has a wide knowledge Isn’t a great athlete but does a good job on the move and can excel in bootlegs. Has nice touch on the ball. Placement is good on all levels of the field. Even with his average arm strength, Jones is an excellent deep-ball thrower. Deep balls are silky smooth and placed very well.
Weaknesses: Mechanics are very inconsistent. When he steps into his throws, they are excellent, but he more often than not throws without his feet working with him. These throws are all arm and torso. Arm strength is capable but not something that is a plus trait. Doesn’t have a zip on the ball that you would like to see. Is a subpar athlete and looks like a guy who just hit the weight room for the first time.

While I believe that Mac Jones can be successful at the next level, he will need a lot of pieces surrounding him. I believe his career potential is that of a Kirk Cousins. He will give you a streak of really good games and have a streak of others that are not good. In the right situation, however, I think he can be very successful. The wide zone scheme offense would be a seamless fit for Jones. With all of this being said, I wouldn’t take Jones in the first round. If you need a quarterback on day 2, I think Jones is worth the value at that point.
